Oliver Sacks was a British neurologist and writer whose books made neurology accessible to general readers. He is best known for Awakenings, his 1973 account of treating patients who had been unable to move for decades after the 1920s sleeping sickness epidemic, and for The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, a collection of case histories. Most of his career was spent in the United States, and he also wrote on migraine, music and the brain, and natural history, including Musicophilia and The Island of the Colorblind.
