Oscar Wilde, an Irish author, poet and playwright, was best known for his Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), for the plays An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, and for epigrams and bedtime stories for children such as The Happy Prince. His career collapsed in 1895, when he was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour. He died in 1900, and several of his plays continued to be widely performed.
