Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet, diplomat and politician who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. He became known as a poet at thirteen and wrote surrealist poems, historical epics and love poems, including Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair (1924). His 100 Love Sonnets is a sequence of love poems written for his wife. Neruda died in Santiago in 1973, the day before he was due to leave Chile for Mexico.
