Paule Marshall was an American writer, best known for the 1959 debut novel Brown Girl, Brownstones, a coming-of-age story about a Barbadian immigrant family in Brooklyn. Marshall's other books include the fiction Daughters, Praisesong for the Widow, The Chosen Place, the Timeless People, and The Fisher King, plus the short story collections Reena and Other Stories and Soul Clap Hands and Sing. In 1992 Marshall was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.
