Philip Roth (1933–2018) was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fiction often drew on Newark, New Jersey, his birthplace, and blurred the line between reality and fiction. He first drew attention with Goodbye, Columbus, a 1959 short story collection that won the National Book Award for Fiction. He later wrote Portnoy's Complaint, The Plot Against America, an alternate history, and the Zuckerman novels, narrated by his literary alter ego Nathan Zuckerman. His American Pastoral won the Pulitzer Prize.
