Pramoedya Ananta Toer was an Indonesian novelist whose work covers Dutch colonial rule, the independence struggle, and the regimes of Sukarno and Suharto. He was best known for the Buru Quartet, made up of This Earth of Mankind, Child of All Nations, and Footsteps, which he composed while imprisoned on the island of Buru from 1969 to 1979, reciting it to fellow prisoners before it could be written down. Though he was well known outside Indonesia, he faced censorship at home, and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature eight times. He also wrote The Girl from the Coast.
