Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) was an Austrian poet and novelist who wrote mainly in German, with some work in French. He is best known to English-language readers for the poetry collections Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus, and for the semi-autobiographical novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. Letters to a Young Poet, ten letters published after his death, is one of his best-known books, and his collection The Book of Images is also widely read.
