Raymond E. Feist is an American fantasy author best known for The Riftwar Cycle, a series of novels and short stories set in the worlds of Midkemia and Kelewan. His first novel, Magician, was published in 1982 and grew out of a role-playing game he and his friends created in college as an alternative to Dungeons & Dragons. Born in Los Angeles in 1945, Feist also wrote The Firemane Saga and, with Janny Wurts, the Empire Trilogy.
