Rhoda Broughton (1840–1920) was a Welsh novelist and short story writer whose best-known book is Cometh Up as a Flower (1867). Her early novels earned a reputation for sensationalism, and her later work, which critics often overlooked, includes Dear Faustina and Lavinia, the latter about a young man who feels he would have been better off as a woman. Her other novels include Belinda, Not Wisely but Too Well and Red as a Rose Is She, and she was a long-time friend of Henry James.
