Richard Brautigan was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer who began as a poet, with his first collection appearing in 1957. He is best known for the novels Trout Fishing in America (1967) and In Watermelon Sugar (1968), and much of his work mixes black comedy, parody, and satire. His debut novel, A Confederate General from Big Sur (1964), follows a man who believes himself to be the descendant of a Confederate general. Brautigan died in 1984.
