Roald Dahl was a British writer of children's books, short stories, poetry and screenplays, best known for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox. Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, he lived most of his life in England and flew as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. His short stories, including those in Tales of the Unexpected, are known for their unexpected endings, while his children's books are darkly comic and unsentimental. He died in 1990.
