Robert A. Heinlein (1907–1988) was an American science fiction writer, engineer and naval officer, sometimes called the dean of science fiction writers. He is best known for Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, stories that explore personal liberty, self-reliance and the way societies treat nonconformist thought. He was named the first Science Fiction Writers Grand Master in 1974, and four of his novels won Hugo Awards.
