Robert Graves was an English poet, novelist and critic, best known for the historical novels I, Claudius and Count Belisarius, and for King Jesus. He is also remembered for Good-Bye to All That, his memoir of his early life and the First World War, and for The White Goddess, his study of poetic inspiration. His translations of The Twelve Caesars and The Golden Ass are still valued for their clarity, and he won the 1934 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for I, Claudius and Claudius the God.
