Robert Hughes was an Australian art critic, writer and television documentary producer, best known for The Shock of the New, a book and television series on modern art. He was for a long time the art critic at TIME magazine. His history The Fatal Shore (1986) examines the British convict system in early Australia. He died in 2012, and his writing was noted for its power and elegance.
