Robert Macfarlane is a British non-fiction writer and a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He is best known for books on landscape, nature, place, people and language, including The Old Ways, Landmarks, The Lost Words, Underland and Is a River Alive?, and he has worked often with musicians, composers and artists. In 2017 he received the E. M. Forster Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Macfarlane's other books include The Wild Places and Mountains of the Mind.
