Roger Angell (1920–2022) was an American essayist best known for writing about sports, especially baseball. For many years he was a regular contributor to The New Yorker, where he also served as chief fiction editor. His baseball essays appear in Five Seasons, The Summer Game, Late Innings and Season Ticket, and he also wrote the memoir This Old Man and A Pitcher's Story, a portrait of the pitcher David Cone. Angell wrote fiction and criticism as well, and for years he contributed an annual Christmas poem to the magazine.
