Sadeqa Johnson's novels are historical fiction with a coming-of-age thread, including House of Eve and Yellow Wife. House of Eve follows two Black women in the segregated 1950s, one in Philadelphia and one in Washington, D.C., as love, ambition and an unplanned pregnancy bring their lives together. Questions of motherhood, class and race run through it, along with a streak of historical romance.
