Sarah Orne Jewett

Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet, best known for local color works set along or near the southern coast of Maine. Her books include The Country of the Pointed Firs and A Country Doctor, the latter following a young woman in a quiet New England town who sets her sights on a medical career despite the expectations of her day. Jewett is recognized as a practitioner of American literary regionalism.
