Sarah Waters is a Welsh novelist best known for novels set in Victorian society that feature lesbian protagonists, chiefly Tipping the Velvet (1998) and Fingersmith (2002). Both were adapted into BBC television mini-series, and the South Korean film The Handmaiden (2016) was drawn from Fingersmith. Her other novels include Affinity, The Little Stranger, The Night Watch and The Paying Guests, which range from Gothic fiction to war and social history.
