Shashi Tharoor is an Indian politician, civil servant and author. His books include An Era of Darkness, a history that questions whether British rule brought progress to India, and The Great Indian Novel, a satirical novel. A member of the Indian National Congress, he has represented Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha since 2009, and earlier served as an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
