Shirley Hazzard, born in Australia and also a U.S. citizen, wrote novels, short stories and essays. Her 2003 novel The Great Fire won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction, the Miles Franklin Award and the William Dean Howells Medal. Her 1970 novel The Bay of Noon was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize in 2010, and The Transit of Venus is a coming-of-age novel of hers. She also wrote two critical books on the United Nations Secretariat.
