Shūsaku Endō was a Japanese writer who wrote from the viewpoint of a Japanese Catholic, and he was best known abroad for Silence, his 1966 historical novel, which Martin Scorsese adapted into a 2016 film. His other books include The Samurai, The Sea and Poison, Wonderful Fool, and the story collection Stained Glass Elegies, in which characters move through churches and hospitals and faith meets illness. He received the Akutagawa Prize and the Order of Culture, and was grouped with the Third Generation of postwar writers.
