Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis, a method of treating conflicts in the mind through dialogue between patient and analyst. His books include The Interpretation of Dreams and Civilization and Its Discontents, in which he examines the tension between instinctual desire and the demands of society. Born in 1856 and dying in 1939, he also developed the theory of the id, ego, and superego, and his ideas remain influential in psychology and popular culture.
