Sigrid Undset, a Danish-born Norwegian novelist, began publishing historical fiction in 1907 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. Her best-known work, Kristin Lavransdatter, is a trilogy published between 1920 and 1922 about a Norwegian woman's life in the Middle Ages. Her other books include The Master of Hestviken and Gunnar's Daughter. She left Norway for the United States in 1940 in opposition to Nazi Germany and returned after the war in 1945.
