Sinclair Lewis was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, best known for Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith, Elmer Gantry, Dodsworth, and It Can't Happen Here. In 1930 he became the first American author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Many of his books take aim at American capitalism and materialism between the wars, and he is respected for his portraits of modern working women. He died in 1951.
