Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian who wrote more than 120 plays, seven of which survive in full, including Antigone, Electra and Oedipus Rex. He was the most celebrated playwright at the dramatic competitions in Athens for almost fifty years, winning 24 of the 30 he entered. His Theban plays, Oedipus Rex and Antigone, sit alongside Oedipus at Colonus in the cycle that carries his name.
