Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher and Christian theologian, widely considered the first existentialist philosopher, who died in 1855. He wrote about organized religion, ethics, love, and how a person lives as a single individual, stressing authenticity, personal choice, and the duty to love. Among his works are Either/Or, Fear and Trembling, and The Seducer's Diary, which probes the motives behind desire, manipulation, and ethical responsibility.
