Stefan Zweig was an Austrian writer raised in Vienna, best known for the story Letter from an Unknown Woman, the psychological novel Beware of Pity, and the memoir The World of Yesterday, which describes life in the waning years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1934 he left Europe for England, later settled in Brazil, and was found dead there with his wife Lotte in 1942. His other books on the shelf include Chess, a psychological story set around a match aboard an ocean liner, and The Post-Office Girl.
