Marie-Henri Beyle, who wrote under the pen name Stendhal, was a French writer best known for the novels The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma. He was admired for his close study of his characters' inner lives and counted among the early realists. His book De l'amour, on passionate love, was mostly ignored when it appeared but has since been read as one of the first modern attempts to understand love. Armance and Lucien Leuwen complete his novels.
