Susan Sontag was an American writer and critic who wrote mostly essays and also published novels. Her first major work was the essay "Notes on 'Camp'," published in 1964, and her best-known critical books include Against Interpretation and On Photography. She also wrote the novels The Volcano Lover and In America, and she wrote widely about photography, illness, war and human rights, travelling to areas of conflict such as the Siege of Sarajevo.
