T. S. Eliot was a poet, essayist and playwright, born in St. Louis, Missouri, who moved to England in 1914 and settled there. He was a leading figure of modernist poetry in English, and his works include "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915), The Waste Land (1922), and Four Quartets (1943), while he also wrote seven plays, among them Murder in the Cathedral (1935). Eliot received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 and died in 1965.
