Thomas Bernhard was an Austrian novelist, playwright and poet who wrote in German and is considered one of the most important German-language authors of the postwar era. His best-known works include the novels Frost, Correction and Extinction, along with his memoirs Gathering Evidence. Known for long monologues by troubled narrators and a sharp, unsparing view of Austrian culture, he also wrote Concrete, The Loser and Woodcutters. He died in 1989 in Gmunden, Upper Austria.
