Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer and essayist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. He drew on his own Hanseatic background in Buddenbrooks (1901), and his later novels include The Magic Mountain (1924), the four-part Joseph and His Brothers (1933–1943), and Doctor Faustus (1947). He also wrote the novella Death in Venice (1912). After Hitler came to power in 1933 he fled to Switzerland, later moving to the United States.
