Thomas Paine was an English-born American Founding Father, inventor, and political philosopher whose pamphlets helped inspire the push for independence from Britain. His best-known work is Common Sense (1776), followed by the pro-independence series The American Crisis. Later he wrote Rights of Man (1791), a defense of the French Revolution, and The Age of Reason, which argued for Deism and against Christian doctrine.
