W. E. B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist who also championed Pan-Africanism. He is best known for The Souls of Black Folk, a collection of essays, and for Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880, a 1935 history that challenged the view that Black Americans were responsible for the failures of the Reconstruction era. He also wrote the 1940 autobiography Dusk of Dawn and helped found the NAACP in 1909. He died in Accra, Ghana, in 1963.
