Winfried Georg Sebald, who wrote as W.G. Sebald and preferred to be called Max, was a German writer and academic who died in December 2001 at the age of 57. His books include Austerlitz, the story of a man brought to England as a child refugee on the eve of the Second World War who later sets out across Europe to recover his past, along with The Emigrants and The Rings of Saturn. He also wrote Vertigo, a book of essays and travel writing.
