Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist, poet and historian, best known for the Waverley novels, which were among the most read novels in Europe for nearly a century. He also wrote the narrative poems Marmion and The Lady of the Lake, and he helped establish the historical novel. Among his books are Ivanhoe, a medieval tale of a knight seeking justice in England, and Guy Mannering, Old Mortality, Quentin Durward and The Antiquary. He worked as an advocate and legal administrator, and died in 1832.
