Wendell Berry was an American novelist, poet, essayist, environmental activist and farmer, closely identified with rural Kentucky. He was best known for the Port William novels and stories, including A Place on Earth, Jayber Crow and That Distant Land, and for essays such as The Unsettling of America and The Gift of Good Land. He received the National Humanities Medal and delivered the 2012 Jefferson Lecture, and in 2015 he became the first living writer inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.
