William F. Buckley Jr. was an American conservative writer and political commentator who founded National Review in 1955 and hosted the public affairs program Firing Line from 1966 to 1999. His books include God and Man at Yale (1951), a critique of Yale's approach to religion and academic freedom, and a spy series starring CIA officer Blackford Oakes. He also ran for mayor of New York City in 1965, finishing third.
