William Golding was a British novelist, playwright and poet, best known for Lord of the Flies (1954), the story of schoolboys stranded on an island during their escape from war. He won the Booker Prize in 1980 for Rites of Passage, the first novel of his sea trilogy, To the Ends of the Earth, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. He was knighted in 1988 and died in 1993.
