William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an English playwright and poet, and part-owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men. He is best known for tragedies such as Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth, along with comedies like A Midsummer Night's Dream and history plays such as Henry V. He also left 154 sonnets, and his plays are still performed more often than those of any other playwright.
