Witold Gombrowicz was a Polish novelist and playwright, born in 1904 and died in Vence, France, in 1969. He is best known for Ferdydurke, his 1937 novel about immaturity, youth, and class roles in Polish society, and for Cosmos, which The New Yorker called his most accomplished novel. He gained fame only in the last years of his life, and his diaries, published in 1969, are considered his masterpiece by many readers. He is now counted among the foremost figures of Polish literature.
