Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960) was an American writer, anthropologist and folklorist who wrote about racial struggles in the early twentieth-century American South. Her most popular of four novels is Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), and she also published folklore research in Mules and Men and Tell My Horse. Her nonfiction book Barracoon, about Cudjoe Lewis, one of the last people brought illegally to the US in 1860, was published after her death.
