Description

A young schoolteacher, Odili, returns to the rhythms of village life with hopes of personal advancement and a belief that integrity still matters. When a charismatic politician, Nanga, arrives with promises of progress, Odili is drawn into the orbit of power—only to discover how quickly ideals can be traded for influence, spectacle, and self-interest. As Odili moves between the village and the capital, he witnesses the machinery of corruption and the seductive logic of revenge, where public rhetoric masks private bargains. Chinua Achebe’s sharp, satirical style turns this political coming-of-age into a broader indictment of governance, moral compromise, and the fragile line between ordinary ambition and complicity.
