Description

In 1960s Baltimore, restless housewife Maddie Schwartz leaves her marriage and reinvents herself as an aspiring newspaper reporter, determined to make a name in a changing city. When the body of a missing woman is discovered in a park lake, Maddie pursues the case while becoming entangled in the earlier murder of a young girl and the overlooked death of a Black bartender. Her investigation exposes the era’s racism, misogyny, and social divisions—and forces her to confront the consequences of ambition pursued without regard for those around her. Blending the atmospheric detail of historical fiction with the tension of a character-driven mystery, the novel offers a sharp portrait of female ambition and moral blindness.
