Description

In this powerful debut novella, Daniel Mengara crafts an unforgettable story of a Gabonese mother's resilience against the unjust pressures of her village. Told through the eyes of her son, Mema's sharp tongue and unwavering principles often place her at odds with tradition, especially when her husband's violence leads to his suspicious death, making her the prime suspect. Facing accusations and the threat of losing her children, Mema must fight for her truth amidst a culture grappling with changing customs and beliefs. Mengara masterfully interweaves prose with the rhythms of traditional oral storytelling, bringing to life a profound and touching tale of a woman's strength in a time of transition.

i just could not connect with how this was written. it was far too off topic and winding. the repetition once i finally got back into the story about mema was soul crushing after the weird tangents (which i acknowledge were meant to parallel the village elders telling stories for the youth to find meaning in).
