Description

After the collapse of his marriage and business, Ellis Hock returns to the remote Malawian village where he once served as a Peace Corps volunteer, convinced that Africa holds the happiness he has lost. Instead, he finds a community transformed by poverty, aid, ambition, and time—and discovers that the people and place he idealized no longer exist as he remembers them. As his attempt to reclaim the past grows increasingly fraught, the novel explores disillusionment, cultural misunderstanding, moral responsibility, and the complicated legacies of charity and colonialism. Unflinching and provocative, it is a psychologically charged story about longing, belonging, and the dangerous distance between memory and reality.
