Description
In this debut collection, Alissa Nutting turns everyday labor into something uncanny, following women and girls who take on “unclean” jobs that blur the line between necessity and the grotesque. Across bizarre, sharply observed stories, the characters navigate bodies, routines, and social expectations as the world around them tilts—sometimes toward dark comedy, sometimes toward speculative dread. Nutting’s fiction lives in the slipstream between literary realism and science fiction, using surreal premises to probe themes of gendered power, contamination (literal and emotional), and the ways society assigns value through work. With inventive voice and unsettling imagination, these stories offer a fresh, prize-winning look at what we’re asked to endure—and what it costs.
