Description
A late-life return to a provincial Hungarian town becomes a surreal test of faith, memory, and human perception in this capstone novel by László Krasznahorkai. Baron Béla Wenckheim—an exile from Buenos Aires burdened by debts and longing—comes home seeking reunion with his high-school sweetheart, only to find that confusion, rumor, and opportunism have already taken root. As gossip spirals into schemes involving con men and local power brokers, a world-famous natural scientist who studies mosses and retreats to a Zen-like shack outside town delivers unsettling monologues about trying to immunize the mind from thought. With Krasznahorkai’s signature long-winded intensity and apocalyptic sense of atmosphere, the story unfolds like an endless storm—where the ordinary turns absurd and the shadow of death and the abyss presses in on everyone.
