Description
A former convict turned accomplished painter, Jim Stegner has built a new life in Santa Fe, leaving his violent past behind as his work gains recognition in the art world. When he witnesses a local troublemaker brutally abusing a horse, Jim's protective instincts override his hard-won restraint, setting off a chain of events that will test his commitment to redemption. As his paintings begin to blur the line between art and prophecy—including a haunting portrait of a man digging a grave—Jim finds himself inexorably drawn back into the darkness he thought he'd escaped. Peter Heller's taut narrative explores the tension between transformation and fate, asking whether a man can truly outrun his nature or if violence is simply an inescapable part of who he is.
